Psalm 81:16 1/2012
He should have fed them also with the finest of wheat; and with Honey From The Rock should I have satisfied thee.
Dear Friends and Family,
It is so hard to believe that we are once again beginning a new year. Praise the Lord for his yearly reminder of the new beginnings available to us in Christ! Last month we talked about the giver’s heart and I mentioned that this month we would be speaking about the two mediums of exchange. We left off last month speaking of Melchizedek and how he was a type and shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ. We saw how our giving included all that we have and was given out of love and thanksgiving and trust. This month I want to continue on that teaching, but I will be focusing mainly on our financial giving though I want you to keep in mind that giving indeed involves EVERYTHING. The reason I want to focus on the financial end is the same reason Jesus told the rich young man to give all that he had to the poor when he asked about how to have eternal life. We know that eternal life does not require us to give all we have away, but Jesus was trying to show the young man that he had a wrong attachment to his money and a wrong idea of where his financial security came from. At this point in the man’s life he was unable to trust the Lord concerning his finances. For the most part our money is the hardest thing for us to trust God with. So, with that in mind, I want to pick up where we left off last month by reading more about Melchizedek in Hebrews 7:4-6:
Hebrews 7:4 KJV
4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
Hebrews 7:5-6 Amplified
5 And it is true that those descendants of Levi who are charged with the priestly office are commanded in the Law to take tithes from the people which means, from their brethren though these have descended from Abraham. 6 But this person who has not their Levitical ancestry received tithes from Abraham [himself] and blessed him who possessed the promises [of God].
Here, tithing is not compared to the Law, but to Abraham. Though tithing was instituted under the Law, we are no longer under the Law; however we are still under the Abrahamic covenant which has not yet been fulfilled. Tithing is now under the order or pattern of Melchizedek. Jesus is our King and High Priest and he has blessed us and continues to bless us and so out of love, thanksgiving, and gratitude we give him back a tenth of all we have. Giving under the Law was compulsory. You HAD to give to remain in right standing with God. It was part of the Law, and you HAD to give one tenth. Scripture says they TOOK the tithes. If you missed a payment of your tithes you had to repay a 5th more. Tithes under Melchizedek were not taken, they were given freely in gratitude and respect. Remember, the Law was instituted as a schoolmaster to show the people their need and their sin; and to teach them how to walk in the principles of love and trust. We’re free from the Law, but as Galatians 5:13 said, “………Do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh.”
Hebrews 7:8 KJV
8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
Here (earth) men that die (us) receive tithes, but there (heaven) He (Jesus) receives them of whom it is witnessed that He (Jesus) ever liveth. Clearly we can see that when we give we are giving to Jesus Himself, therefore by the same token when we do not give we are withholding from Jesus Himself. You are giving two mediums of exchange. First we give money on earth to men to further the Gospel and the Kingdom of God. that is the medium of exchange here on earth. However in heaven the medium of exchange is FAITH and OBEDIENCE to God. So when we give our tithes if we are giving in faith and obedience then we are also giving to God in heaven. However if we are just throwing our envelope in the basket out of some kind of duty or obligation or even fear or worse yet to get something, then we are only giving one medium of exchange and our heavenly account is receiving nothing.
Matthew 6:19-21 KJV
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. KJV
Remember Romans? With the heart man believes unto righteousness? So, you can give, and give, and give, and never receive the blessing because you only gave one medium of exchange (money) to one place, (man), and you neglected the faith and the heart attitude which is your medium of exchange with God. You gave to man as under the Law, but neglected HIM – Where your heart is is very important in giving!
Malachi 3:10-11 KJV
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.
When you are bringing ALL the tithe (everything from every area of your life) then God will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so great you won’t be able to contain it. He will rebuke the devourer for your sake so that the devourer will no longer kill, steal, and destroy the work of your hands and your very life and wellbeing. The word rebuke there is a Hebrew word indicating a check applied to a person or peoples through strong admonitions or actions. Who will stop the devourer? Your financial expertise? Your budget? Your careful planning? No, HE WILL. When will he do it? When you GIVE EVERYTHING including your tithe to Him.
Why does he ask us to give? Verse 10 tells us it’s so that there will be meat in the house of the Lord. Meat spiritually speaking is revelation in the Word, but there is also a natural meat. The word for meat here is meal. Meal was a meal offering and meal is grain and grain is seed. So the tithe or money we give into God’s Kingdom becomes seed which he will greatly multiply when we give with a giver’s heart. Not only to us but to His Kingdom purposes. If all the members of each individual church would give everything (their time, talents, and tithe) with a heart of faith, trust and love then there would never be a need in God’s physical house that could not be met. That includes the needs of the people as well. We all fall on hard times sometimes and need a little help, there are ministries and missions that need help as well; and God’s people will be able to give that help if we all give what is needed with hearts of faith and trust. God says, “Prove me in this thing.” See if I won’t do it. Not only material blessings, but spiritual ones. The windows of heaven are the place of spiritual blessing. Both material and spiritual blessings will dry up if our hearts are not right before God, and if we do not supoort His work on earth and care for one another.
18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. KJV
The word wealth here is a word that comes from a root word meaning force, whether or men, means, or other resources and it carries the meaning of strength, wealth, army, valor, and virtue. God wants to provide so much more for us than our finances alone ever could. Why does he say he gives us the power to get wealth? So that He may establish HIS COVENANT. He wants to establish His Covenant in your life in every area of your life and he wants to establish His Covenant on this earth! We are no longer under the Law of the tithe or anything else, but we are under the principles of the tithe as much as we are all the other principles of the Abrahamic Covenant.
Malachi 3:8-9 KJV
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
This is God talking to the Priesthood. At this time in the history of Israel they were the richest nation around. Yet they were robbing God of what was due Him. They must have been giving something because they knew the tithe was part of the Law and they asked him – “How have we been robbing you.” God says they were giving him the left overs! You see giving involves more than your money even when you’re giving money! It involves your whole life. Not only were they robbing God’s earthly home financially, but spiritually they were giving nothing to God at all according to the heavenly medium of exchange. No faith, no obedience, no love, no gratefulness, no respect for the Lord, no trust in him. They just followed the Law, and by this time they had greatly strayed from that as the Book of Malachi tells us. So, those who are robbing God are those whose giving is no more than empty ritual or formula and those who are giving God their leftovers. Taking for themselves and their needs first. Let’s not be guilty of robbing God in EITHER medium of exchange. Let’s not use our freedom as an excuse for the flesh. Be a hilarious giver of your time, love, and tithes because he gave all for you. We can trust Him as our source. He’s still El Shaddai. He’s still the covenant keeper! As he was to Abraham he wants to be to you – ADONAI our motive and attitude in giving.
